Amiri Baraka
And something other than Somebody Blew up America...
Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note Lately, I've become accustomed to the way The ground opens up and envelopes me Each time I go out to walk the dog. Or the broad edged silly music the wind Makes when I run for a bus... Things have come to that. And now, each night I count the stars. And each night I get the same number. And when they will not come to be counted, I count the holes they leave. Nobody sings anymore. And then last night I tiptoed up To my daughter's room and heard her Talking to someone, and when I opened The door, there was no one there... Only she on her knees, peeking into Her own clasped hands Wise I WHYS (Nobody Knows The Trouble I Seen) Traditional If you ever find yourself, some where lost and surrounded by enemies who won't let you speak in your own language who destroy your statues & instruments, who ban your omm bomm ba boom then you are in trouble deep trouble they ban your own boom ba boom you in deep deep trouble humph! probably take you several hundred years to get out! |

And I wouldn't classify Baraka as "angry black man poetry." He certainly can be an angry black man, and he certainly voices a strong dissatisfaction with race in the US, but he also discusses a number of matters which are relevant to more than just the black community, including the aforementioned racial/political/cultural dissatisfactions. It's disheartening when people grapevine an issue because they're the concerns of an angry black man. |
