Exclamation networking issues

sup bitches. i needs me some help, in return, i offer porn and i promise to come back and post some. conversely, if said offer is not sweet enough, ill promise to stay away for another year.
discuss amongst yourselves the offer you will accept.
regardless, i hope you'll help me, otherwise, ill set the decagon server on fire again.

heres my ish.

My computer, a behemoth i built a bit over a year ago is having problems contacting the router, it says it has limited or no connectivity. upon attempting to repair, it states it cant renew the ip.

background: the router is a DI-604, d-link router. my pc connects via ethernet through the motherboard. for the last 976398763 months, its been peachy. then all of a sudden, after the first restart after a windows patch. it freezes after i leave it on all night. (leaving it on all night isnt new)
i check it in the morning and hold the power til it shuts off (also not new), and git to class. when i come back i turn it on and i have my current problem.

ive tried, switching ports on my machine and the router, rebooting, recycling, releasing, renewing, reseting the router, manually seting the dns stuff (later i set everything back to auto) uninstalling the windows patches, reinstalling the patches, using the winsockxpfix, lspfix, and kicking it. Im at a loss. i dont know what is wrong.

Im going to attempt to get on the network through a knoppix shell after a shower, but id appreciate any help you can give on this.

First and foremost try bypassing the router, I had a string of different D-Links over 6 months that had issues, the 604 included.. so I simply cannot trust them at all when there is a problem that needs troubleshooting..

I'm assuming this is XP.. I know you ran winsockxpfix.. but, the simple.. even simpLER method is simple to run this from the command prompt:

netsh winsock reset <enter>
...<wait>...
then reboot when it tells you.

Also try doing a rollback if your system restore is enabled and functioning..

Try using a different ethernet adaptor, see if someone has a usb->ether adaptor to test with since they're fairly simple and no one has to gank one out for you to borrow..

Try reinstalling windows ontop of the current installation, haven't done that in a long time but you won't lose program installation files, might have to reinstall some things to get the registry reconfig'd, but, not a huge deal usually...

If things just don't seem to be working, do some backing up, and..

/wrist... j/k

Format that fucker and do a clean install if all else fails.

Hopefully one of these random things will help.

I did try straight to modem ethernetness, no avail.

ill try the ethernet usb thang. It'll at least tell me if its software or hardware. Im just worried that i may have blown out the networking part of the mobo. But I do have a networking pci card at home, which is, due to finals, 6 days away. it will be difficult, but i believe i can manage.

I hope i wont have to reinstall, my dvdrom is being a bit of a bitch lately ::unhappy face::

anyway, thanks donnie

Ah, well.. so when you connect from the router to your pc, you get the status light (1, 2, 3, or 4) lit up on the router, as well as blinking activity on the back of your system where the cat5 plugs in?

I guess sometimes that would still occur even if the ethernet is blown (which is way too common), sometimes tho if it is blown, then the computer wouldn't even recognize a cable being connected..

Yeah, give a different adaptor a shot, hopefully that's all you need... and having a blown ethernet port on the motherboard generally won't effect anything else if it was a small power surge.

the problem rectified itself magically.

I did everything except reinstalling windows core programs, even the switching of ports to no avail.

then earlier today i was going to work and i just switched the power off. no shut down procedures. and when i got back, i turned it on and yay.

but im sick now, which blows

That was a small sacrifice to make though, getting sick in order to get a working pc, again the gods are pleased.
