HD-DVD Done For?
http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-987...g=2547-1_3-0-5
Toshiba has not commented publicly about it yet, but, "a report on Japan's NHK says Toshiba has made the decision to withdraw from next generation high-definition DVD production." With HD-DVD losing support from Warner recently, losing Netflix, Wal-Mart, and several other outlets, as well as the latest sales figures showing an ever increasing gap between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, this doesn't come as much of a surprise, although it has not been confirmed by Toshiba directly yet. I personally haven't purchased any HD-DVDs since getting my player for the 360, just have King Kong which came with it, and waiting on my 5 free movies from the rebate. Maybe as this plays out the current releases will drop in price. |

isn't hd-dvd the one that doesn't have region coding? and less drm stuff? that seems ideal to me--but maybe i don't have the facts straight. i don't own a hd-dvd- or blu-ray-capable dvd player, so i haven't bothered to learn much about either format.

I don't recall either one being drm free, but I believe hd-dvd is region free.. unless it's a combo dvd then the sd dvd will still have region coding.

i still dont see the need for either format yet. but i will admit the little bit of blu-ray i saw was nice. i just dont need super sharp movies. my vision is terrible anyway.

haha yes, exactly. plus both are still super expensive, and by the time they are down to what DVD is at now, there will be something new coming out.

Nah, I do believe blu-ray will be around for a while, it was just a matter of weeding out the competition.. everyone is moving towards backing blu-ray, so it looks like Sony has finally won out on something.
I have both, the format is the same on both as far as picture.. but I'm a HD junky (to a small extent), I like good clear pictures, and have been spoiled by it over the past couple years, since I got an HDTV. Microsoft has discontinued the HD-DVD addon for the 360, and it's speculated that the price will drop to 49.95 in the near future (who knows if this is true), but the HDA3 from Toshiba is now $99 at walmart (and I can imagine everywhere else), so take that, and the fact that HD-DVDs will be available online for a while, and there are a bunch of good quality titles already on the format.. it's worth looking in to. Amazon.com has all HD-DVD titles on sale for at least 30% off.. http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link...pf_rd_i=hd-dvd

Yeah.. 50 bucks is probably a one-time price drop for the addon, and I still feel that the current movie selections will be available at decent prices for a bit..
I'm not sure how good the quality would turn out, but, if you like I can use my camcorder to capture a blu-ray (ps3), and then an hd-dvd (xbox 360) and upload it. They're pretty comparable.
